How to Recycle

Washington and Lee University’s recycling program is a separate stream operation which means that participants must separate the recyclable materials at the collection station. Please remember that the contents of recycling containers that are contaminated with other recyclable materials or trash will not be recycled, and will be taken to the local landfill.

 

What do you want to recycle?

Traditional: Aluminum cans, Plastics (#s 1-7), Glass, Mixed Paper

Non-Traditional: Antifreeze, Batteries, Cardboard, Cellphones & PDAs, Computers, Clothes, Electronic Storage Media, Eyeglasses and Frames, Food, Freon, Furniture, Grease, Hazardous Materials, Lamps, Motor Oil & Filters, Newspaper, Office Supplies, Organic Matter, Pallets, Peanuts for Mailing, Printer Cartridges, Scrap Metal, Surplus Materials, Techno Trash, Tin Cans

 

 

 

 

TRADITIONAL RECYCLABLE MATERIAL

 

ALUMINUM CANS

Cans should be empty, rinsed out and, if possible, crushed.

Final Destination: Aluminum is recycled into new cans.

PLASTIC #1 - #7

Before you recycle plastic containers, please rinse, crush and remove plastic tops. Only plastic containers with the triangular recycling symbol are accepted. Plastic bags are OK, Styrofoam is not.

Final Destination: The plastic is recycled into polar fleeces, ‘plastic wood’ and many other materials.

GLASS

Glass containers should be rinsed out and separated by color.

Blue glass goes in with the green. Pyrex, ceramics, plate glass and auto glass are not accepted.

Final Destination: Clear glass is recycled into new containers. Colored glass is used in construction.

  MIXED PAPER

"Clean mixed paper" includes: computer and copier paper, hard back books, junk mail, newspapers, magazines, and ‘slick’ printed material. Staples, tape and the occasional paperclip are OK.

It does not include: paper contaminated by food, metal or plastic bound material, corrugated cardboard, food containers (i.e. pizza boxes), waxed paper, or general trash.

Final Destination: Paper is recycled into pasteboard and many other products.

NON-TRADITIONAL RECYCLING (i.e. 'technotrash', durable goods, etc.)

There are many other items that can be reused or recycled. Please email recycling@wlu.edu for help recycling items not mentioned on this site, for pickup of large quantities of recyclables, or for any other questions or comments. You can also make use of Campus Notices, an internal electronic bulletin board, to offer the campus community items that you no longer need.

 

ANTI FREEZE

Antifreeze from University vehicles is recycled by the Mechanics Shop.

Final Destination: Antifreeze is refined and reused.

BATTERIES

Rechargeable and non rechargeable batteries are accepted. Most batteries can go into the Techno Trash bin; however, wet cell and lithium batteries require special handling. Please email recycling@wlu.edu for pick up of these batteries. The Facilities Management Electrical and Mechanical shops also recycle batteries.

Final Destination: Battery acids are neutralized and the metals in the batteries are reclaimed.

CARDBOARD

All packing materials and trash should be removed. Waxed boxes are unacceptable. Staples and packing tape are OK.  Cardboard is collected at the following locations: the Science Center, Law School and Commons loading docks. Evans Dining Hall, the Facilities Management maintenance shop, the Warner Center, the Beta House, the sororities and at Davidson Park.

Final Destination: Cardboard is recycled and used to create new cardboard.

CELLPHONES & PDAs

Used cell phones, PDAs and other small personal electronics, chargers and other equipment can be recycled in the Techno Trash bin.

Final Destination: Units are refurbished for reuse or the materials are recycled.

COMPUTERS

University Computing collects retired computers and accessories each year.

Final Destination: A private company destroys the data, reuses good parts and deals with unusable parts in an environmentally responsible fashion.

CLOTHES

Clean clothes, bed linens and curtains can be donated to the local Goodwill Industry Store (Rt. 60 east of town, 464-1117) or the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Thrift Store (30 S. Main Street, 463-9840). Items are sold to generate funds for charitable works.

ELECTRONIC STORAGE MEDIA

All sorts of storage devices can be recycled in the Techno Trash bin. This includes: CDs, DVDs, floppy discs, audio, video and computer tapes, cassettes and jewel cases.

Final Destination: High quality plastics are recycled into various products.

EYE GLASSES & FRAMES

Prescription and nonprescription glasses are recycled with Techno Trash.

Final Destination: Donated to the local Lions Club.

FOOD

Uncooked food from the Elrod Commons and Evans Dining Hall is composted on campus.

Final Destination: Cooked food that is still useable is donated to the Campus Kitchen Project. Non perishable food is accepted by Campus Kitchen Project (contact Caitlin Schopp, the Campus Kitchens Coordinator, at schoppc@wlu.edu or call x5223) and the Rockbridge Area Food Pantry (712 N. Main Street, 464-8484).

FREON

Freon from refrigeration units is collected by the Plumbing shop.

Final Destination: Freon is reused on campus.

FURNITURE

 

Personal furniture may be donated to the Habitat for Humanity Resale Store (Randolph Street, 463-3770) in Lexington. Pickup of materials can be arranged by contacting the resale store.

 

Final Destination: Furniture is sold to raise money for affordable housing projects in the Rockbridge area.

  GREASE

Grease from deep fat fryers and grease traps is collected by an outside vendor.

Final Destination: Grease is used in the production of pet foods.

  HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

Hazardous materials are dealt with in an environmentally responsible fashion. Rockbridge county holds a household hazardous waste collection day each spring.

Final Destination: Some materials can be neutralized, some incinerated, some reclaimed and some encapsulated and then landfilled.

LAMPS

Fluorescent bulbs and ballasts are recycled by the Electrical shop. Projector bulbs are also recycled.

Final Destination: Bulbs contain mercury which is recovered and reused.

MOTOR OIL & FILTERS

Motor oil from University vehicles is recycled by the Mechanics Shop.

Final Destination: Oil is refined and reused and the filters are recycled as scrap metal.

NEWSPAPER

Newspapers are collected by the University Bookstore and the Leyburn and Law School libraries.

Final Destination: Newspapers are used by a local picture frame company in shipping.

OFFICE SUPPLIES

 

Auxiliary Services should be notified about the disposal of University property. Campus Notices can be used to locate community members that can reuse materials that would otherwise be discarded.

ORGANIC MATTER

Compost is made from uncooked food obtained from Dining Services and animal bedding. Wood, wood chips and leaves that are collected on campus are sometimes available from Facilities Management.

Final Destination: Food scraps are collected nightly by the Kompost Krew and turned into compost for front campus gardens and the campus greenhouse where herbs for use in the Marketplace are grown.

PALLETS

Wood pallets are saved at the Facilities Management maintenance shop.

Final Destination: Available for reuse.

PEANUTS FOR MAILING

Packing materials are collected by the University Bookstore and at the Leyburn and Law School libraries.

Final Destination: Reused on campus or taken to the local "Pack and Mail" store.

PRINTER CARTRIDGES

Laser and ink jet cartridges are being collected by Project Nicaragua in the Elrod Commons lobby. They may leak so place them in a plastic bag or cardboard box.

Final Destination: Cartridges are refurbished and resold.

SCRAP METAL

Metals of all types, including small appliances, wire and pipe, is collected at the Facilities Management Maintenance Shop.

  SURPLUS MATERIALS

Surplus materials that belong to the University are sold at an auction held on campus by Auxiliary Services each fall.

  TECHNO TRASH

A number of items are called Techno Trash including batteries, eyeglasses, electronic storage media, printer cartridges, cell phones and other small electronic devices. The collection can is located in Elrod Commons in the lobby under the courtesy phone. Please email recycling@wlu.edu for pick up of large volumes of these materials.

‘TIN’ CANS

Food cans are collected at the Marketplace, Evans Dining Hall and the sororities.

Final Destination: The cans are recycled as scrap metal.
